In this study, we investigated anti-photoaging effects of enzyme hydrolysis extracts from microalgae by-products in UVB-induced human dermal fibroblasts (HDFs). After lipid extraction, three microalgal residues (Chlorella sp., Nannochloropsis sp., Phaeodactylum tricornutum) were enzymatically hydrolyzed by five commercial enzymes (¥á-chymotrypsin, Flavourzyme, Neutrase, Papain, Pepsin). Among the 15 enzymatic extracts, Flavourzyme extracts from Nannochloropsis sp. residues (FN) showed the highest inhibitory activities on UVB-induced expression of MMP-1 and significantly increased type I pro-collagen synthesis. The MAPKs/AP-1 signaling pathway was downregulated by FN in a dose-dependent manner. This study suggests that FN can be used as a therapeutic agent to prevent UVB-induced skin photoaging.
